Despite all my years living in Southeast Asia, I always had difficulty getting to Bali. More than a few times, I'd purchased flights to the little gem of an island only to have some hiccups arise at the last minute and mess up my travel plans.
But, one fateful day in 2011, I was invited by the NGO network Via Campesina to provide English-Spanish interpretation services at a two-week conference in Bali on the International Treaty for the Protection of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) hosted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
Sure, the days were long, and the work was exhausting, but it was also my first experience interpreting at such a high level, which was exhilarating. I only got a little time off to explore the island, but what little I saw on the conference field trips was beautiful and confirmed that Bali is a unique place worth revisiting!
