#13 CROATIA

 

I'm pretty lucky to be married to a Croat -- sure, they might be a temperamental and eccentric bunch, but they're also super fun, have a beautiful country with a stunning coastline, and some of the best food in Europe. In fact, just the other day, I read an article in the New York Times extolling the benefits of the Mediterranean diet, especially the foods of Italy and Croatia, for leading to better health and longevity. 

I've been fortunate enough to visit Croatia frequently over the past twenty years, and not only do I always have a great time, but I discover something new on each trip. Lately, I've been island hopping and enjoying some great beaches and chilled-out seaside towns. For such a small country, it is surprisingly diverse, and every region offers something unique to try or experience. Whether it's a spicy kulen from Slavonia, seafood from the Adriatic, or frog legs from the Croatian hinterlands, there's always a great meal around the corner

And, at the end of 2024, we very unexpectedly purchased an apartment in Zagreb and decided to make it our home base for the foreseeable future. Since then, we've been able to explore much more of the country and its neighboring regions at a more relaxed pace, which is key to travelling with both a toddler and a mighty Airedale terrier in the back seat of the car! Adjusting to life in Croatia has been surprisingly easy and relaxed, even if locals are perpetually perplexed by why an American would relocate here. I guess that's just a bit of the self-depricating national psyche, but deep down I think most Croats know they've got an OK thing going on here ;)
