Looking for a quick weekend getaway from Istanbul? May I suggest Romania, where you can gorge on cured meats in Bucharest and explore spooky castles in Transylvania! And with plenty of beer and wine along the way, you're guaranteed a great trip!
Suppose you're making the most of your weekend. In that case, you've probably caught an appallingly early morning flight, so head straight to Caru'cu Bere restaurant for some hearty and traditional Romanian food to energize you for the rest of the day. Prepare yourself for lots of fatty meats and rich cheeses that'll stick to your ribs in the best way possible....and some beer, always beer!

Now that you're fed and buzzed, it's time for some sightseeing. There's a bunch of really cool architecture to see in the city, not least of which is the gargantuan Palace of the Parliament. This stunning piece of postmodern architecture has 1,100 rooms spread over 365,000 m2 and has the unique distinction of being the "world's largest civilian building with an administrative function" and the "world's heaviest building." The cost of heating, electricity, and lighting alone exceeds US$6,000,000 annually!
Other cool buildings include the CEC Palace of the Deposits and Consignments, Romanian Athenaeum, Arcul de Triumf, and Revolution Square. And, once you've finished touring, you'll likely be thirsty and hungry again, so head to any of the city's many taverns for a wine tasting and some more meats and cheeses!

On day two, rent a car and head deep into the Carpathian mountains to explore the dramatic castles of Transylvania. Indulge your imagination with stories of Vlad the Impaler, aka Count Dracula, amidst the region's neo-renaissance spires and mountain scenery. Rooms filled with medieval weapons and spooky sculptures of scary dudes really help set the scene. Stay safe from vampire bites by indulging in more delicious local meats, cheeses, and sausages before returning to Bucharest. Just save some space for a dinner of delicious mangalitsa pork at
The Artist Restaurant to round out the perfect weekend getaway, with some red wine, of course ;)
