Afghanistan is one of the most amazing countries I've ever had the privilege of getting to know.
I moved to Kabul in spring 2012, having secured a new job with
The Asia Foundation, and was promptly greeted with a terrorist attack at the Kabul Star Hotel just before my plane landed. Suddenly weird acronyms like DBIED and SVBIED started entering the daily conversation. This was a significant change from the tropical paradise of Thailand, where I'd been living previously!
Then, after a year, I moved over to the United Nations and spent the next five years with the
UN Environment Programme in Kabul. After 6 years, I finally left Afghanistan in December 2017. However, it's still a significant part of my life, and I still continue to consult with the UN on agriculture and environmental management projects in the country. Before COVID-19, I was lucky enough to travel back and forth to Afghanistan every few months, where I'd get my fill of delicious kebabs, pick up a few more war rugs, catch up with dear friends, and foster my love of street cat photography around the hideous UNOCA compound.
This might be the most challenging blog post I'll ever write. I have no idea how to effectively describe my last decade with Afghanistan in a few words and photos. Still, I'm going to try, and so here's a photo list of some of my favorite things from Afghanistan:
