Dubai was the first place I visited in the Middle East, even if it was just a short layover on my way to
Afghanistan in 2012. I don't have much to say about Dubai except that I generally avoided transiting through it over the next several years in favor of the more interesting Istanbul, which also had a direct connection to/from Kabul. Eventually, though, I did learn to appreciate the lazy appeal of a destination with no purpose, where all you do is lounge by the pool, order room service junk food, and watch movies all night :)
