I traveled to Oman in 2012 with my amazing Scottish friend, Eleanor, for a weekend break from
Kabul. We had both started working at The Asia Foundation about two months earlier and were eager to explore some more exotic destinations in the region, especially places where insecurity wasn't an issue.
While most people head to Dubai to party away their R&Rs with champagne brunches and luxury hotels, we hit up less-traveled Muscat to explore souks, beaches, castles, and museums. And, before I forget, do not miss out on the Sultan's Military Museum in Muscat - and if you see Ibrahim, our hilarious guide from the Navy band, you'll be in for a treat!
